Why Work with Us

Neighbouring rights are the rights to broadcast sound recordings, and to play them in public.

Open Music Rights’ mission is to make sure independent artists and rights holders receive all the money they are due from the exploitation of these rights.

This is an increasingly important income stream. Global revenue was $2.7bn in 2020, representing 12.6% of total recording industry revenue.*

The rights, and resulting revenue, are usually managed in each country by a dedicated collecting society.

To earn money when your sound recordings are played in public or broadcast in a particular country, the society there needs to have information about the sound recording and who should be paid.

Too often, independent artists and music companies are missing out on this revenue

Managing these rights, registering with the right societies, and dealing with problems like missing or inaccurate data, can be complicated and time consuming.

It is hard to know if you’re doing the right things, and receiving the right money.

International representation from your local collecting society may not always offer full coverage, or full confidence in the representation of your rights. This can be a problem if you have success in some specific countries outside of your domestic market.

The largest music companies benefit from direct memberships, and closely scrutinise collecting societies to maximise their revenue.

Open Music Rights provides direct access to sound recording rights collecting societies

Our growing network covers 30+ territories, 85% of the global market by value and 18 of the top 20 territories.

Working as your agent means, where possible, you have direct membership of societies.

Direct society memberships can offer quicker payments, more transparency, and more confidence that repertoire is being correctly managed and revenue returned.

We are flexible, transparent and effective

You choose the territories.

We work on a rolling 1 year term, charging a simple fee: 5% of the revenue plus £0.02 per track, per territory, per month.

We register repertoire, manage rights and representations with societies, and report back all revenue and data provided.

Expertise and technology

Our technology and processes are designed to minimise the complexity and workload for our partners and take advantage of our teams’ expertise.

Our team has many years of legal and operational experience managing music rights, working with international collecting societies, and developing lasting partnerships with independent artists, labels and the wider community.

We were closely involved with the development of new delivery technology RDx, with WIN, IFPI and collecting societies, which allows for automated, standardised repertoire and rights submissions to many societies.
